A company that manages  reservation  of internet domain names is known as domain name registrar. Additionally  Generic top- level domain (gTLD) registry  gives accreditation  for a company to be a domain name  registrar . A registrar performs tasks  in adherence  to the guidelines of the designated domain name registries.

DOMAIN NAME REGISTRY

This is an organization involved in managing top-level domain names. They perform the following functions:

• creating domain name’s extensions
• setting of the rules for the subject domain name
• as well as working together with registrars to selling the domain names to the public.

Basically domain registration is the process of registering a domain name, as well as  identifying one or more IP addresses with a name that is easier to remember and use in URLs to identify particular Web pages. Domain name registrant is an individual or company that does registration of domain names.

Domain name registries performs the Maintenance of domain registration information , additionally they are the ones in contract with domain registrars for the purpose of providing registration services to the public. Therefore an end user is the one who decides on the selection of a registrar (based on his or her own preferences) to provide the registration,  therefore the preferred registrar becomes the selected registrar for the domain the use will choose.

The user’s registrar  is the  one  at a position to conduct the modification or deleting of the information about domain names at the  central registry database. For  a user to switch registrars, it usually involves domain transfer process between the subject registrars, they follow the governing policies of domain name transfer.

What’s the difference between a registrar and a registry?

Registries are organizations that manage top-level domains (TLDs) such as domains ending in .com and .net. Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)  does the management registries. Which is a department of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). KENIC (Kenya Network Information Centre) organization manage top-level domains ending with .ke. The registries delegates Commercial sales of domain name registration to the registrars
